A double from sailors, but manager Malik disappointed target not met

NURUL Elia Anuar and Mohd Romzi Mohamad restored Malaysia’s pride by delivering two gold medals in the sailing competition, which ended at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Pattaya yesterday.

The 16-year-old Nurul saved her best for last, winning the decisive final race to snatch the Laser Radial gold.

Nurul won Race 12 ahead of Siobham Tam of Singapore. Both finished with 14 points from six victories and five six-second place finishes each. But Nurul was awarded the gold by virtue of winning the final race. Thailand's Sai Chimsawat took the bronze on 30 points.

Nurul, who hails from Negri Sembilan, was delighted to bag the gold in her maiden appearance in the Games.

“I was optimistic that I could get the gold after the first few days when I led the competition,” said Nurul, who previously competed in the Laser 470 Open class and won a bronze in the Doha Asian Games last year.

“But the Singaporean gave me a tough fight and it was mentally tough to focus because I was behind by one point going into the race today. This win will give me the confidence to do well in future outings.”

Nurul will also be making attempts to win a place in the Olympics from the Laser Radial World Championships in Auckland in March.

Romzi's victory in the International Laser competition, which is another Olympic event, also augurs well for Malaysia.

He finished third in the final race and garnered a total of 13 points. He was the winner in seven of the 12 races and also secured four second-place finishes. Singapore's Koh Seng Leong finished on 16 points for the silver and Manat Phothong of Thailand took the bronze on 30.

While the Malaysian team managed to better the one-gold haul from Manila two years ago, manager Malik Sulaiman was disappointed that they fell short of the National Sports Council's (NSC) target of three.

“It was a mixed outing for us. Our team are made up of youngsters, not more than 22 years of age, and the stress of competing in such a competitive environment got to them after the first few days,” said Malik, a silver medallist in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.

“We had to do a lot of motivation work to get them to handle the challenges because this was the first SEA Games for almost all of them.”

Malaysia also got two silver and two bronze medals yesterday.

Mohd Asri Nazrin won the final Race 11 to secure silver in the boys' Optimist and another came from the combination of Nurul Ain Isa-Noor Balqis Yaacop in the women's 470.

The bronze medallists were Alissa Chew (girls' Optimist) and Hairuddin Han (Super Mod).

On Wednesday, Malaysia won bronze in the team Optimist racing.

With the average wind speed of 18 knots not conducive for handling sails, the Malaysian team — who arrived at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club sailing venue on Nov 19 to get acclimatised — could struggle to achieve their target.

However, team manager Abdul Malik Sulaiman said the wind speeds have dropped to 8-10 knots in the past two days, and he hopes it would remain steady till the competition is over.

“We have young sailors in our team and they are used to lighter wind speeds. I am hoping the wind will not blow too strong during the competition. But at least it gives us a chance to prepare for any eventuality,” he said.

Malaysia have a large team of 24 sailors competing in 11 of the 16 sailing events, with the Malaysian Yachting Association looking to the 2010 Asian Games.
“A number of countries have sent young teams here as they are also looking ahead to bigger tournaments later. Only Thailand appears to have a number of experienced sailors and they will probably win most of the gold medals.

“But that does not mean we cannot achieve our target of five gold as I think we have a decent team to do so,” added Malik.

The optimist events — boys, girls and team — and the laser radial and standard events are Malaysia's best bet for gold while Rufina Tan, the 2006 Doha Asian Games optimist gold medallist, will partner Mabel Tan in the International 420.

Although the skill levels of the region's windsurfers can hardly be considered world class, they will still expect to put on a mesmerising show at Pattaya City's Jomtien Beach, a renowned tourist spot in Thailand.

Ian Low, and Yap Leong Soon are the Malaysian trailblazers in this high-risk sport where battling gusting wind and huge waves are only some of the dangers facing the surfers.

Included as part of the sailing programme, windsurfing offers four gold medals in the lightweight, heavyweight, youth and Formula categories when action begins on Friday. Team manager Malik Sulaiman, however, is reserved of Malaysia's medal chances in windsurfing.

“Thailand are expected to dominate the events, that is probably why it's being held. But our surfers could spring a surprise as Leong Soon has a lot experience surfing in Australia and New Zealand and is ranked third in the region,” said Malik.
Leong Soon, 45, will compete in the Formula windsurfing while 17-year-old Ian debuts in the youth category.

But sailing gold medal hopefuls remain in the traditional optimist and laser categories where Malaysia are aiming to rake in five gold medals.

Sukan Sea XXIV: Luncur layar pertaruh enam pingat emas

BERBANDING sukan pelayaran, sukan luncur angin mungkin agak kurang dikenali di peringkat Asia Tenggara lebih-lebih lagi pada Sukan Sea Korat edisi ke-24 pada kali ini.

Acara yang berlangsung di Jomtien Beach, Pattaya City itu mempertaruhkan enam pingat emas dengan tuan rumah, Thailand dikatakan mahu memburu lebih banyak pingat emas dalam acara berkenaan.

Pada Sukan Sea Manila 2005, acara berkenaan tidak ditawarkan manakala hanya dua acara dilangsungkan membabitkan sukan pelayaran tetapi kali ini, 18 emas ditawarkan dalam kedua-dua acara oleh pihak penganjur.

Tanpa sebarang sasaran utama, dua peluncur layar negara akan memulakan cabaran pada kali ini membabitkan gabungan tenaga muda dan lama untuk menyekat dominasi Thailand.

Malaysia akan diwakili Ian Low Yee Han dalam acara Radial Remaja yang juga acara Sukan Olimpik manakala Yap Leong Soon akan beraksi dalam acara Formula dengan kedua-duanya akan memulakan saingan esok.

Bagi pengurus negara, Malik Sulaiman, kedua-dua atlit negara tetap memiliki peluang walaupun tuan rumah tampak lebih gagah apatah lagi bersaing di tempat sendiri.

“Kita ada gabungan peluncur muda kali ini dengan Ian baru berusia 17 tahun manakala Yap sudah pastinya lebih berpengalaman pada usia 45 tahun.”Acara ini sebenarnya agak kurang popular di rantau ini dan mungkin kerana mahu memungut pingat lebih banyak, tuan rumah menawarkan acara ini pada Sukan Sea kali ini,” katanya.

Walaupun begitu, dua peluncur negara tetap mendapat pendedahan berguna untuk Sukan Sea kali ini terutama Ian yang sudah berada di sini hampir sebulan lalu kerana menyertai kejohanan luncur angin di sini.

Kejohanan berkenaan adalah pemanas badan sempena Sukan Sea dan menurut Malik, ia adalah saingan paling baik untuk memberi peluang buat atlit muda itu meningkatkan prestasinya.

“Bagi Yap pula, dia kini menghuni tangga ketiga ranking peluncur di Asia Tenggara dan sudah menimba lebih banyak pengalaman dengan menyertai pelbagai pertandingan tahun ini termasuk di New Zealand dan Australia,” katanya.

Mitag jejas latihan skuad pelayar

TIUPAN angin yang semakin kurang berikutan ribut taufan Mitag sejak minggu lalu di Filipina nyata memberi kesan terhadap atlit perahu layar skuad Sukan Sea negara apabila perlu berehat seketika daripada mengemudi layar mereka sejak empat hari lalu.Sebelum ini, angin yang tidak menentu arah sedikit menyukarkan barisan pelayar muda negara dengan angin kadangkala kuat dan tiada angin langsung berhampiran kawasan pertandingan di Ocean Marina Club, Pattaya City.

Keadaan sama turut dirasai atlit negara lain apabila mereka mengambil 'rehat' bagi menunggu kehadiran semula angin bagi meneruskan latihan sebelum kejohanan sebenar acara itu membuka tirai pada 8 Disember nanti.

Justeru, laporan internet menjadi sumber paling tepat bagi mengagak perubahan arah angin bagi membolehkan perancangan diatur sebaik mungkin untuk terus mengadakan latihan terbaik.

“Sejak datang ke sini, kami akan melayari internet untuk melihat pergerakan angin pada setiap hari kerana ia amat mustahak bagi sukan ini.

“Cuma hari ini keadaan agak baik kerana kami sudah mendapat angin sekitar 8-10 knot,” kata pengurus pasukan, Malik Sulaiman.

Pelayar resah tiupan angin di luar jangkaan

RINTANGAN angin akan menjadi halangan paling besar skuad pelayaran negara dalam misi mengutip lima pingat emas seperti disasarkan pada Sukan Sea XXIV di Pattaya City, Thailand.

Hasil latihan sejak 19 November lalu, keadaan angin di sekitar Pattaya ialah 20 knot, keadaan cuaca yang tidak sesuai buat pelayar negara mencatat persembahan baik di laut yang bergelora.

Bagaimanapun keadaan kembali baik sejak dua hari lalu bersama tiupan angin antara 8-10 knot, tiupan angin sederhana yang disifatkan keadaan paling sesuai untuk pelayaran.

Pengurus pasukan pelayaran, Abdul Malik Sulaiman, berkata ketika ini semua pelayar berlatih bersendirian sambil beberapa negara turut menjalani latihan di sana seperti Filipina, Singapura dan Thailand.

“Pelayar kita berusia lingkungan 18-20 tahun, jadi angin yang sederhana amat sesuai buat mereka, saya harap pada pertandingan nanti keadaan laut akan kekal seperti sekarang.

“Bagaimanapun kita sudah bersedia dan mempersiapkan diri jika berlaku perubahan angin yang boleh mengganggu,” katanya.

KFC Holdings give sailors RM1.5mil boost

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Yachting Association will be sending their biggest ever team to the SEA Games and they received a timely boost yesterday – a RM1.5 million sponsorship from KFC Holdings (M) Bhd.

A memorandum of understanding for the one-year sponsorship from Jan 1-Dec 31 next year was signed between KFC Holdings and the association and it was witnessed by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai.

And the Malaysian sailors, their spirits lifted by the sponsorship deal, are looking ready to go the extra mile in their bid to return home from Pattaya with their best ever showing in the SEA Games outside the country.

Malaysia have not won more than two gold medals on foreign territory. The best performance of 5-3-1 was achieved when Malaysia hosted the Games in 2001.

Team manager Malik Sulaiman said that Malaysia would compete in all 12 events and the target was to win five gold medals.

“We will be sending the biggest team of 27 this time and we hope to secure good results to repay the investment from our sponsors and the NSC (National Sports Council). The NSC’s target for us is three gold medals but we are aiming higher,” he said.

The sailing team will be the first in the Malaysian contingent to leave for the Games. They will leave on Monday for Pattaya to get used to the local conditions.

“Most of our sailors will be making their Games debut and the three weeks of preparation will do them good. We will be putting them through motivational sessions in the last three days before the start of the competition,” said Malik.

Malaysia will be strong contenders for gold medals in the Optimist, Laser Standard, 420 and 470 events.

Malaysia have dominated the optimist competition, which is an Under-15 event, since the 1993 Games in Singapore.

At the last Games in Manila in 2005, Alvin Yeow delivered the only sailing gold medal for Malaysia from the boys' Optimist event.

RM1.5m sponsorship boost for yachting

PUTRAJAYA: KFC Holdings (Malaysia) Bhd has given a timely RM1.5mil sponsorship boost to the Malaysian Yachting Association, which will be sending their biggest ever team to the Korat SEA Games next month.

The two parties on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding for the one-year sponsorship from Jan 1 to Dec 31 next year, witnessed by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai.

Malaysia recorded its best yachting performance of 5-3-1 when it played SEA Games host in 2001. The country has never won more than two gold medals in foreign waters.

But the current team will be ready to change that and is targeting five gold medals at the Korat Games next month.

Team manager Lt Cdr Malik Sulaiman said Malaysia would be contesting all 12 events in the sailing competition, which will be held in Pattaya.

Yachtsmen targeting 4 golds at Korat

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Yachting Association has set a target of four gold medals from 12 yachting events at the SEA Games in Korat, Thailand in December.

The manager of the yachting team to the Games, Lt Cdr Malik Sulaiman said if the target could be achieved, it would be the second best gold tally for yachting after the 2001 edition in Kuala Lumpur where Malaysians grabbed five gold medals.

“Ever since Malaysia competed in yachting at the SEA Games, beginning in 1961, the best achievement by the Malaysians was in 2001 in Kuala Lumpur with five gold medals.

“Malaysia's best achievement in the biennial Games abroad was in 1997 in Jakarta with two gold. So in Korat, the association hopes to exceed that number,” he said Wednesday.

Malik said Malaysia would participate in the optimist (men, women, team), laser (men, women), super moth, international 420 (men, women), international 470 (men, women), windsurfing and Keelboat.

Declining to disclose the events that would contribute to Malaysia's gold tally, he said the squad, comprising 25 yachtsmen and assisted by five coaches, were now in the final phase of training held at three venues.

Training for the optimist and laser events are held in Port Dickson, Keelboat in Port Klang and windsurfing in Penang.

“Four coaches, Abdul Rani Idris, Zaidi Amin Pardi, Hamdan Rozi and Shahril Razak, who are assisted by Ronald Van Vierman from Holland, are responsible for the training of all the yachtsmen,” Malik said.

Kapal layar sasar empat emas di Korat

KUALA LUMPUR – Persatuan Pelayaran Malaysia menyasarkan kutipan empat pingat emas daripada 12 acara sukan tersebut yang dipertandingkan pada Sukan SEA di Korat, Thailand, Disember ini.

Pengurus pasukan kapal layar ke temasya tersebut, Lt. Komander Malik Sulaiman berkata, jika sasaran itu menjadi kenyataan, ia akan menjadi kutipan emas kedua terbaik bagi acara kapal layar selepas edisi 2001 di Kuala Lumpur dengan jumlah lima emas.

‘‘Sejak Malaysia mula menyertai acara kapal layar Sukan SEA pada tahun 1961, pencapaian terbaik negara ialah pada tahun 2001 di Kuala Lumpur, dengan lima pingat emas.

‘‘Bagi temasya dua tahun sekali itu yang diadakan di luar negara pula, pencapaian terbaik ialah pada tahun 1997 di Jakarta, dengan kutipan dua emas. Jadi di Korat, persatuan berharap dapat mengatasi jumlah tersebut,” katanya kepada Bernama di sini, semalam.

Malik berkata, Malaysia akan mengambil bahagian dalam acara optimis (lelaki, wanita, berpasukan), laser (lelaki, wanita), super moth, international 420 (lelaki, wanita), international 470 (lelaki, wanita), windsurfing (luncur layar) dan Keelboat.

Beliau yang merahsiakan acara yang dijangka bakal menyumbang emas kepada Malaysia berkata skuad tersebut kini dianggotai 25 pelayar dan dibantu lima jurulatih dan kini memasuki fasa latihan terakhir masing-masing, yang diadakan di tiga venue.

Latihan bagi acara optimis dan laser diadakan di Port Dickson, keelboat di Pelabuhan Klang dan luncur layar di Pulau Pinang, katanya.

Kesemua anggota skuad dipilih daripada 18 pelayar elit yang berada dalam program antara persatuan dan Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) termasuk atlet yang menyerlah dalam sirkit ranking kebangsaan serta pelbagai kejohanan antarabangsa di luar negara.

‘‘Empat jurulatih, Abdul Rani Idris, Zaidi Amin Pardi, Hamdan Rozi dan Shahril Razak dibantu oleh jurulatih dari Belanda, Ronald Van Vierman bertanggungjawab melatih kesemua pelayar tersebut,” katanya.

Acara kapal layar di Thailand nanti akan berlangsung di Ocean Marina Yatch Club di Pattaya.
